Bugle Burgundy Glow (Bugle weed): Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow'

This tri-coloured bugle makes a lovely ground cover option for a partially shaded border. Plants spread and knit together to make a colourful and evergreen carpet. The pretty rosettes of leaves have a base of grey-green liberally splashed with dark burgundy and a paler rose and in many cases a cream margin. Dense upright spires of flowers appear in spring and early summer. These are rich in pollen and nectar and are much appreciated by bees, early butterflies/moths and other pollinators.

It prefers a moist soil which does not dry out and tolerates sun or partial shade. Beware too much midday sun or the foliage may scorch, and exceptionally dry conditions can result in powdery mildew.

Reverted shoots of green or bronze may occasionally appear, these need to be removed at their base.

It is ideal for underplanting shrubs and roses, and also for covering hard to manage banks and slopes.

It grows well in mixed containers and makes an attractive edging plant.

Medicinally it has been used in the past as an astringent and a tonic. Bugle has also been an addition to medicated oils used on bruises, tumours and wounds.
