This has proved to be a relatively hardy herb that only needs protection from the severest frosts of winter. It makes an ideal container plant as it can be moved under cover easily in mid winter and will grow readily from the base each spring. Whilst normally grown for its attractive flowers and scented foliage, the leaves can also be used in stuffings and with fruit in pies and fruit salads. The dried leaves and flowers make a valuable addition to pot pourri. In Central America there is evidence that it has been used by the natives to treat fever, and may still be used in this way today.
